Half of a Yellow Sun centers largely around the Nigerian Civil War and the problems that created it. Adichie, who grew up in the immediate aftermath of the war, crafts a unique story from three different perspectives and ultimately explores the ability of love to flourish and diminish in times of war, as well as exploring political and personal senses of identity in post-colonial Africa.

Adichie has stated that she believes that many of the problems that created the war still exist to this day. Much of this is evidenced in the rich conversation and speculation about the future of Africa in the social gatherings that occur at Odenigbo's home.
