One factor that might affect people’s attitudes towards diverse groups is their family. A person’s parents or guardians can play a key role in how people view others who are not ostensibly like them. It’s not unreasonable to claim that a person who was raised by tolerant, inclusive people will have a positive attitude when it comes to diverse groups of people. Parents can impart their children with values that can stick with them for the duration of their life. They can help them understand that people who are different aren’t unequal.

School, too, can play a pivotal role in how people perceive diverse groups. If a child attends a school with a diverse student population, it’s not unreasonable to argue that the student will grow accustomed to diversity and won’t think of heterogeneous communities as discomforting or threatening. Additionally, by teaching students about a wide range of cultures and groups, schools can help people become familiar with people who seem different from them.

Of course, parents, family, and schools aren’t always an accurate way to predict the attitude that someone will have towards diverse groups. For example, when George W. Bush was president, he supported a constitutional amendment that would prohibit same-sex marriages. Barbara Bush, one of his daughters, departed from her dad’s values. In 2011, she publicly declared her support for LGBTQ+ persons and their right to legally marry.

For other aspects that could influence a person’s attitude towards diverse groups, consider cultural factors. These might encompass the music that they like, the movies that they watch, or the social media that they consume.
