The biosphere is used to describe the living world ("bio" = life). All of the plants, animals, and other organisms can be found in the biosphere. It the sum of all ecosystems and biomes on Earth. Thus, the biosphere is the highest level of organization within biology. It is composed of all of the other "spheres" of science, such as the ecosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. It reaches to the region of the atmosphere in which birds and insects can still be found. Likewise, the biosphere reaches to the depths of the ocean floor where deep-sea creatures swim or crawl. The "spheres" of the biosphere affect one another just as the organ systems of an organism influence each other. In this way, the biosphere may be viewed as a closed system.
