The main plot revolves around a girl named Celie. Written in the form of letters to God, Celie recounts her early life as an abused child who had two children by her stepfather. She is then married to an older man named Mr., who is really in love with another woman, named Shug. All he wants Celie for is to take care of his house and children and for sexual purposes. Celie endures this until Mr. kicks her beloved sister, Nettie, out of his house after Nettie refuses his sexual advances. Then Shug, falls ill and Mr. brings her to his house for Celie to take care of. Shug and Celie become friends and eventually Celie learns to stand up for herself.
