In chapter 4, Simon visits Daniel and invites him to the synagogue to hear Jesus preach. Daniel goes with him, but reluctantly. He is a zealot, meaning that he thinks the only way to overthrow the Romans is by force, by fighting them. Jesus preaches a message of peace and nonviolence, and Daniel just doesn't believe that is the way to achieve freedom. On his way back to his village, Daniel can't help himself--he throws a rock at a Roman soldier and is beaten by another soldier. That convinces him that peace is not the way to freedom, and he leaves to rejoin Rosh and the other zealots.
