Thomas Paine became famous during the time leading to the Revolutionary War. Thomas Paine believed we needed to become independent from Great Britain. He observed all of the events that had occurred and believed we had no choice but to break away from British rule. He wanted to convince other Americans of his point of view.

To convince Americans, he wrote a pamphlet called Common Sense. This pamphlet explained to Americans why we needed to break away from the British. In essence, Thomas Paine said it was common sense that the British could no longer rule us. He explained the reasons why he believed we needed to be free. Many colonists read this pamphlet, and it helped convince some people that we needed to be independent. This pamphlet furthered the cause of breaking free from Great Britain and becoming independent.
