What made the new tenant Kakura Ozu suspect that the concierge would know the source of the comment regarding happy/ unhappy families?
In the novel, The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, the new tenant Kakura Ozu suspects the the concierge is not what she appears to be. He is suspicious when she flinches as the grammar error they both hear, he thinks the dog named Leo was named after Leo Tolstoy, and the young girl Paloma in the building agrees that Renee is no ordinary concierge when seen close up --meaning when you get to know her. Renee reads as much as Paloma which means that she would have knowledge about books. Also, Renee's family life was not a happy one, and therefore quotes which refer to an unhappy family life would have more meaning to her.
