Literary elements are the nonoptional devices that form a work of literature. Some of these are tone, narrator, mood, chronology, structure and characters. Literary elements exclude (do not include) literary techniques like metaphor, personification, and irony: these are optional devices that provide richness to literature.

One element that Hersey opens with is the overlap of chronological events as effecting various individuals. Miss Sasaki, Dr. Fujii, Mrs Nakamura and others all experience the "flash" that occurred at "fifteen minutes past eight in the morning."
