There are two clues that shown this man's wealth and related social standing. His clothing is made of extremely high quality leather, note the sheen of the black clothing. He is in fashionable black, reflecting the influence of Spanish courts. If he were poor, he would not be wearing such exquisite leather nor would he be wearing black (black was achieved by a special dying process that was difficult to produce). By the Sumptuary laws, if he were poor, he would be wearing all one color and would most likely be wearing "homespun" cloth. His location is the second clue. He is in front of a castle and carrying a sword. He is wealthy and of the upper class.
