Colonialism is generally said to have held back the economic and political development of countries that were colonized.  The colonizers set up colonies in ways that were for their own benefit, not for the benefits of the colonized people.  They set up economies that were meant mainly to provide raw materials to the colonizers.  They failed to educate the colonized people very well or to prepare them to someday rule themselves.  In part because of these things, many countries that were once colonies are now poorly governed and have weak economies.  This, one can argue, is the legacy of colonialism.
