Their is a distinct regional culture of the southern United States that has substantial traction in popular media.
One major part of the image of the south is derived from country music, and is associated with forms or rural poverty, excessive alcohol consumption, unskilled labor, and an attachment to an idealized life of small towns.
Another part of the image of the south is that of social conservatism and evangelical religion, dominated by such groups as the Southern Baptist Convention.
The main image if the south descends from the Civil War and its aftermath, and includes racial segregation and discrimination.
