The leader of the House of Representatives is called the Speaker of the House. This is a very important and powerful position. This person is second in line to become President if the President were to die. If an event were to occur in which the President died and the Vice President couldn’t assume the office of President for some reason, the Speaker of the House would become President. While this has never happened, if it did occur, it would elevate the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the presidency. The Speaker of the House is from the majority party in the House of Representatives. This individual has much influence in determining what bills get to the floor of the House of Representatives. This person also is involved in determining the rules that will be followed members of the House of Representatives. The Speaker of the House is the person mainly responsible for helping to get laws passed that his party supports. The Speaker of the House also has influence over whom is on committees of the House of Representatives. The current Speaker of the House of Representatives is Paul Ryan from Wisconsin.
