It's also worth noting how syntax influences the atmosphere of the chapter where Frankenstein truly sees the creation he's spent nearly two years working on:

His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips.

This comes from the second paragraph in the chapter; notice how many clauses are in this sentence, rushing the reader along the description breathlessly as Frankenstein considers the horror of the creature his own hands have stitched together. This creates tension and mirrors Frankenstein's own nervous realization of his final creation.
