We know that Atticus is an attorney and he is also a member of the state's House of Representatives. He grew up at Finch's landing. He got married when he was older after he had begun practicing law. He is a widower. He has a sister, Alexandra, and a brother, Jack. He is a good man who is ruled by strong morals. He felt like he had to take the case of Tom Robinson because it was the right thing to do, and he would not be able to ask the kids to do anything again if he didn't. He has a lot of patience, not only with his kids but with the people of Maycomb. He tries very hard to be a good father. For example, he allowed Aunt Alexandra to come live with them because he feels like Scout needs her around, but when she wants to fire Calpurnia, he stands up for Calpurnia, thus showing his loyalty.
