A mixture is a substance composed of two or more different types of particles. There are two main types of mixtures: homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures.

  • Homogeneous Mixtures: In a homogeneous mixture, the particles are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. If you take a sample from anywhere in the mixture, it will have the same composition. Homogeneous mixtures are also called solutions.
  • Heterogeneous Mixtures: In a heterogeneous mixture, the particles are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture. If you take samples from different locations in the mixture, they will often have different compositions. Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures composed of liquid particles and solid particles. The solid particles are dispersed in the mixture, but will settle out and separate if the mixture is allowed to stand. Example: sand and water.
