About halfway through the book, Joe tells Skeezie and Bobby that he is gay—and he has a crush on Colin Briggs, the athletic popular boy whom Bobby originally selected to run for secretary on the Freedom Party ticket. Colin, however, already agreed to run for vice president on another ticket, so Helen O'Malley is chosen to run in his place.

By the end of the book, Joe's friendship with Colin has developed into something more. Joe finds out now that his crush on Colin is reciprocated, and they decide to go to the dance together—at great risk to Colin's reputation as a popular kid. Still, Colin discovers, along with the misfits, that it is better to be true to who you are than it is to be popular with others.
