What job designs are the most effective for motivation?

There are a number of types of job designs that can be effective in motivating employees.  Some of them include:

  • Designs that enlarge the job.  These designs give workers more different kinds of tasks to do.  These can make the job more interesting and therefore more motivating.
  • Designs that simplify the job.  This is somewhat paradoxical since the previous sort of design enlarged the job and this narrows it down.  But if a job is too complex, simplifying it can motivate an employee by making their job seem less overwhelming.
  • Designs that enrich the job.  These designs give workers tasks that are generally assigned to people at a higher level.  For example, a non-management employee might be given some jobs usually handled by management.  This motivates employees by helping them to feel more important and more valued.
