The teaching method that is demonstrated in To Sir, With Love is unorthodox. Braithwaite’s revised teaching method might be considered akin to “tough love.” For instance, when Pamela Dare enters his classroom late and quite noisily, he tells the class that she has displayed an undesirable way of entering a room “as if someone had just planted a heavy foot in your backside.” He then tells her to leave the room and to reenter it in a more polite fashion.

He tells his students that they will treat one another with respect, beginning by addressing one another by surname or, for female students, by using the title Miss in front of the surname. This change is meant to show respect and courtesy to one another. His thinking is that if they treat one another with respect, it will, in turn, raise each student’s sense of self-respect.
