Absurd is defined in the dictionary as "the quality or state of being ridiculous or wildly unreasonable," a quality and state that is prevalent throughout Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde frequently used wit and ironic humor in his works, and he usually paired them with absurd characters and absurd events.

The reader is introduced to Wilde's style of humor simply by reading the title of the play. The Importance of Being Earnest includes two women, Cecily and Gwendolyn, who both desire to marry a man named Ernest. There are also two men, Jack and Algernon, who at different times act under the name of Ernest. The subtitle of the play is A Trivial Comedy for Serious People, which alludes to how seriously the characters take themselves, despite their humorous personalities and the comedic situations they find themselves in.
