Sandy and her dog Lob share a close bond for nine years. On a stormy October evening, Sandy is sent to provide some company for her aunt who is home alone. Although Aunt Becky doesn't really like dogs, Sandy takes Lob, who typically follows her everywhere.
Tragically, Sandy is hit by a truck, suffering critical injuries. Her brother Don desperately searches for Lob but doesn't have any luck initially. Sandy remains in a coma, and her worried grandmother visits her in the hospital where Sandy is surrounded by her family.
When Granny Pearce arrives at Western Counties Hospital, she finds Lob waiting outside, trying to gain entrance himself. Granny Pearce demands that the guard allow the dog to visit his beloved Sandy, and after obtaining permission from the medical officer, she makes her way to Sandy's beside with Lob. Lob whines when he sees Sandy, and suddenly Sandy stirs just a bit. The adults allow Lob to go to Sandy's beside; Sandy drops her hand to pet him and opens her eyes for the first time since the accident.
Sandy peacefully falls asleep, and Lob makes his exit. Granny Pearce begins scolding Sandy's parents, who are appalled by Lob's appearance.
The incredible plot twist reveals the source of her parents' sense of awestruck wonder: Sandy's older brother had eventually found Lob, who had died at the scene of the accident. Don had tied concrete to his collar and had buried Lob at sea.
Seemingly, Lob has somehow overcome death to prove his loyalty to Sandy one final time.
