A Man of the People, published in 1966, is a satirical novel by Chinua Achebe. It is written from the perspective of Odili Samalu, a teacher who decides to become a politician in order to take down his enemy, Chief Nanga. It is set in a fictional country. However, one can safely assume that this country is intended to be Nigeria, the home country of the author.
Odili is invited to the capital by Chief Nanga, who used to be his old teacher and is now working for the government as the minister of culture. As a result, he spends a lot of time with Chief Nanga, who had promised to help him to get a scholarship for going to university in London. He attends social gatherings and is introduced to a number of important people.
