The primary process that allows bacteria to reproduce is called binary fission. Binary fission (fission means division and binary equates to two) is an asexual form of reproduction in which a single-celled organism, such as a bacterium, splits into two cells. These two cells, known as the daughter cells, contain identical copies of the DNA from the parent cell. Binary fission happens when the bacterium reaches a certain cell size and the environmental conditions (temperature, nutrients, etc.) are favorable. The entire cell division process is rapid and predictably results in doubling of the bacterial population.

Most species of bacteria can reproduce through binary fission. However, there are other ways in which bacteria can reproduce. Apart from binary fission, bacteria can reproduce asexually through conidia formation, cyst formation, and budding. The sexual methods of reproduction in bacteria include transformation, transduction, and conjugation. When bacteria reproduce through asexual methods, the daughter cell is a clone of the parent cell. Sexual reproduction in bacteria, on the other hand, modifies the bacteria's genetic material and, thus, introduces variability in the daughter cells.
