Temple Church is a church situated in the City of London. It features in The Da Vinci Code, as Langdon and Sophie come here in their quest to find the answer to the line, “In London lies a knight a Pope interred.” They assume that this refers to Temple Church because of its history. However, later the reader finds out that Langdon and Sophie were wrong in thinking that.
Temple Church was built in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, which explains its name. It was intended to be the headquarters for the Knights Templar, and the initiation ceremonies of Knights Templar were held here. Interestingly, it also served as the royal treasury for a short while.
The church withstood a lot of dangers throughout its existence. For example, the church did not get destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666 nor did it suffer too much detrimental damage during World War II. Whilst it was hit by German bombs, it was possible to repair the damage by renovating the church. Nowadays, Temple Church belongs to the Church of England and is still actively used for religious services.
In terms of architecture, the church is divided into two parts. The original part is also referred to as “Round Church.” A second part was added a little later, often referred to as “the Chancel,” making the shape of the church similar to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was at the time considered the most sacred and most important place of worship for the Crusaders, which is why the design of Temple Church was based on the design of this church.
