At the beginning of the story, Ralph and Piggy break out of the jungle to the lagoon. It is described as pool of water bordered on one end by a coral reef and surrounded on the other sides by a strip of beach and palm trees. A coarse grass grows under the palm trees and is littered with fallen coconuts, which Ralph sees as skull-like. Behind the palm trees is the dark jungle.
