In chapter 1, Bruno comes home from school to discover that his family is packing their belongings and moving away. Bruno, the nine-year-old protagonist, is upset by the sudden move, and his mother explains that his father, a high-ranking Nazi officer, has accepted a promotion, which is why they must leave Berlin. Saddened by the news, Bruno slides down the long banister and overhears his parents arguing before he reluctantly begins to help pack.

In chapter 2, Bruno and his family arrive at their new home, which is a depressing, dismal house and the complete opposite of their home in Berlin. Bruno complains to his mother about the decision to move and she informs him that they will be staying here for the "foreseeable future." Bruno then attempts to discuss their move with Maria, who purposely avoids answering the question before they are interrupted by a young soldier with blond hair. After Bruno laments about not being able to play with anyone at their new home, he looks out the window...
