Malala Yousafzai writes her memoir in first person from her point of view. She focuses on her personal experiences as well as those of her family. Due to the nature of her story, Malala also incorporates historical and political contexts, specifically about the rise of Taliban power in Pakistan.

Malala's primary purpose is to fight for girls' education in Pakistan (and around the world). Malala was shot because she was attempting to go to school in Taliban-ruled Pakistan, but she wants readers to know that the Taliban's terrorism cannot intimidate her into submitting. She will continue to pursue her education; in fact, she is even more determined after she is shot. Malala also aims to educate readers about the political situation in Pakistan and to raise awareness for her cause. Malala is extraordinary in many ways, but she hopes to show readers what life has been like in Pakistan and other countries terrorized by the Taliban.
