Modern readers can learn much from Of Plymouth Plantation. The book, authored by William Bradford, is one of the few primary sources from the establishment of the Plymouth colony. It provides a firsthand account by a Pilgrim leader of their persecutions in England, their time spent in the Netherlands, the voyage to North America, and the first few decades of the settlement at Plymouth. In some cases, the book provides the only firsthand account of these events, which include the so-called "first Thanksgiving," a feast to celebrate a successful harvest with several of the region's Wampanoag peoples. It thus reveals much about how the Pilgrims viewed themselves, as Bradford wrote:

May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: "Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity."
