At the Ceremony of the Twelves, Jonas at first does not get an assignment -- he is skipped over when their assignments are announced by number.  However, at the end of the assignments, it is announced that he will be the new Receiver of Memories.

He is selected for this job by the Committee of Elders who have watched him closely over the last few years.  They have decided that they are unanimously sure that he has the attributes needed:

  • Intelligence
  • Integrity
  • Courage
  • Wisdom
  • Capacity to See Beyond (only the current Receiver can know he has this).

All of this is in Chapter 8.
