Environmental analysis, in the simplest terms, is the analysis and study of the environment using scientific disciplines (such as analytical chemistry, etc.). The various components of the environment, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, etc. are analyzed for pollutant levels and trends thereof. The commonly studied pollutants in the air include various gases (for example, carbon dioxide, methane, CFCs, etc.), particulate matter (small particles with sizes in the micron range), metals (such as lead), etc. The various pollutants of concern in our water bodies are organic matter, nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus), metals (such as arsenic), oils & fats, dissolved gases, etc. Similarly, pollutant levels are also studied in soil layers and subsurfaces. The monitoring and studying of pollutant levels helps us in analyzing our environment and taking steps to protect it and prevent its degradation.
