Most people would probably define dance as moving rhythmically in time with music, although, of course, one can dance without a musical accompaniment. Some dance is choreographed, and some is spontaneous. Whether choreographed or spontaneous, dance is often an expression of emotions. Many people may find it easier and more effective to express themselves through dance than through words.

Dance can be an individual or collective enterprise, and there are many types of dance, including ballet, tap, and modern. These types of dance are like genres of literature. Each type, like each genre, has a different set of characteristics. Ballet dancers, for example, wear very specific items of clothing, such as tutus and pointe shoes, whereas modern dancers wear a more diverse, individualistic range of clothes.

Dance can also be ceremonial. For example, in Māori culture, there is a ceremonial dance known as the haka, which the New Zealand rugby team traditionally perform before matches. The haka is a dance performed to mark an important occasion or achievement, although many people think that it also has a purpose as a battle dance to intimidate one's opponents.

Dance can also be a good form of exercise, and it has many health benefits, including improved flexibility and balance, weight loss, and improved aerobic fitness. Dance also has many benefits related to psychological health and well-being. It can reduce stress and improve social skills.
