There are numerous similes in Eudora Welty’s story, which employs many descriptions. A simile is a comparison of unlike things for effect, using “like” or “as.”

In the first paragraph, the narrator describes Phoenix Jackson’s slow progress, as the woman is quite old. The “meditative” sound that her cane makes as it strikes the ground is described as being “like the chirping of a solitary little bird.”
