Shell Shaker is a 2001 mystery novel written by American author LeAnne Howe. The narrative is split into two parallel stories; the first one is a modern mystery set in 1991, in Durant, Oklahoma, in which Auda Billy is accused of the murder of her lover—the tribal chief Redford McAlester. In the hopes of saving her daughter, Auda's mother Susan confesses to the crime. Susan's brother Isaac refuses to let these tragic events break the family apart and decides to start an investigation. The Billy family realize that in order to understand what truly happened, they must first solve the mystery of their ancestors and connect the past with the present.

Thus, we go back to 1738 in Chocotaw, Mississippi, when the tribal chief Red Shoes is murdered by a woman named Anoleta. In order to stop a potential conflict and to maintain the peace in the Chocotaw community, Anoleta's courageous mother Shakbatina decides to take the blame for her daughter and confesses to the murder of the chief.
