There were so many inventions during the Industrial Revolution that it's hard to choose one. I would say the assembly line is key. The factory process, of mass producing goods, allowed Americans to buy goods they couldn't afford before because mass producing made things cheaper.

Mass production of food in a preserved state improved American lives. "Dry goods", they were called, and mass factory production along with the railroad made it easy to produce and distribute this food all over the country. Of course, sanitation was lacking, but this system of making food we utterly depend on today. Another invention that helped people at the time was the typewriter, which made almost all business and forms of communication easier and more efficient than it had been.

Even if we look only at the time of the Industrial Revolution, there are many inventions that have improved American life.

For example, the invention of the telephone greatly improved American life.  Once the telephone became widespread, communications between people became much easier.  Businesses could run more efficiently and people could stay in touch with one another more easily.

Similarly, the invention of an effective light bulb was extremely important.  Light bulbs greatly reduced the risk of fire in homes and allowed people to continue doing things at home well into the evening.  They also made it much easier to have factories that could continue to work past dark.

These are just two of the many inventions that improved American life during the time you are discussing.
