Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are the protagonists of the series. Count Olaf is the main antagonist of the series. Violet's internal conflicts center around her need for creative and intellectual outlet (her inventions) and her desire to always protect her siblings. She consistently invents things that help bring her siblings a sense of security. Klaus is always trying to learn more about his surroundings in order to make sense of the world and the unfortunate things that keep befalling the orphans. Sunny tries desperately to be helpful to her siblings even though she is just a baby. Finally, Count Olaf tries to maintain his reputation of infamy and evil while struggling with his hidden emotional attachment to Kit Snicket.
