What are important quotes for Chapter 6 of The Outsiders?
It is very important as you read a text like this one that you try and identify which particular parts of the text are important in terms of describing characters, themes or giving us key information about the plot that is significant later on. In Chapter Six, Dally spends time with Johnny and Ponyboy, and lets them know what has been going on. In particular he shares that Cherry has been helping them. Note how Ponyboy responds to this information:
No, it wasn't Cherry the Soc who was helping us, it was Cherry the dreamer who watched sunsets and couldn't stand fights. It was hard to believe a Soc would help us, even a Soc that dug sunsets.
This is a significant quote, as we see a development in Ponyboy's understanding about humans. From the beginning of the story, he situated us in a world with an insurmountable barrier between the Socs and the Greasers. Now, however, he is beginning to move beyond such artificial labels and identifying the ways that Socs and Greasers share characteristics that can be used to bridge that gap. This is of course an important theme that Hinton is exploring through this story.
Now have a go yourself and read through the rest of the chapter, identifying some quotes that are significant. Hopefully my example will help you do this. Good luck!
