The family is important for at least two reasons.

First, the family is our first and main source of socialization.  This is where we first learn the basic values of our society.  It is where we are taught how we are expected to behave and what ideas we are supposed to believe in.

Second, the family is our main source of emotional support.  We turn to our family members and expect them to love us and care about us at all times.  Because we have them, we feel that we always have someone to lean on in times of trouble or with whom to share our joys.
