Divorce can have a tremendous impact on many members of a family.  It of course affects the couple that is divorcing and it tends to affect any children they may have.  In addition, it can affect their parents and many other family members.

The main impact on family members falls on the children.  They typically have to deal with confusion about what is happening with their parents.  They may have to deal with anger.  Then they have to deal with the fact that they are likely to have to shuttle back and forth between parents.  The parents often are somewhat angry at one another and may well say hurtful things about one another to the children.  This can lead to more confusion for the children.

However, it is not only the couple’s children who must deal with the impact of the divorce.  It can have serious consequences for other family members as well.  The parents of the couple may have to take on more responsibilities (if they live in the same place) as each member of the former couple will no longer have the other member to rely on for help with the kids.  Family relationships that have grown between the couple and their in-laws are severed, leading to sadness on everyone’s part.

In short, divorce can have serious consequences for many family members.
