Sports had a big impact during the 1920s. The 1920s was a very prosperous decade. People had more free time due to increased income and inventions that made household chores easier and quicker to do. As a result, people were looking for ways to enjoy their free time and spend some of the additional income they had. Some people turned to movies and jazz. Other people began to follow sports more closely.

There was a big increase of interest in several sports. Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees helped baseball grow in popularity. Red Grange at the University of Illinois and with the Chicago Bears helped college and professional football become more popular. There was a tremendous interest in boxing with fighters like Jack Dempsey. Bobby Jones helped to bring increased interest to the sport of gold while Bill Tilden did the same for tennis. People had more free time and discretionary income. As a result, sports and going to sporting events became more popular in the 1920s.
