The link below gives a detailed timeline of knowledge of the structure of cells. Before the invention of the microscope, there was no way to actually look at cells, but some scientists still deduced that something like a cell had to exist in order to account for what was known about how living organisms functioned. With magnifying microscopes, and later with electron microscopes, smaller and smaller parts of cells can be seen. Not everything known is the result of actually seeing cell parts. Scientists deduce how things must be structured from what the cells do.
