Abortion was pretty scary in the beginning. Now it has become a routine procedure. It can still cause damage to the mother. Infections that women infertile are much less common.

This is a very broad topic as there are many aspects to the history of abortion and because abortion has been around so long.  There are, for example, records of references to abortion going back as far as 1500 BC in Egypt.  Classical texts (from Greek and Roman times) also discuss things that can be given to a woman to cause her to abort her pregnancy.

More modern, surgical types of abortion have been used since at least the late 1800s.  These techniques have become more and more refined in the years since then so as to reduce the dangers that the woman faces when having an abortion.

In the United States, abortion was generally illegal until the 1960s.  During that decade, a few states started to make abortions legal.  This continued, and the number of abortions rose, until 1973, when the Supreme Court said that states could not simply ban abortions.

The issue of abortion became a major political issue in the early 1980s.
