The novel was set in the time of the early Crusades. Eleanor of Aquitane married Louis the King of France in 1137. She went on the Second Crusade with him. When she divorced him on their return, she married King Henry II of England. One of their most famous sons was Richard the Lion-Hearted who also went on Crusade. While Richard was away from his country, his brother John ruled so unjustly that the legend of Robin Hood was born. Eleanor died in 1204 after burying nearly all of her husbands and family. Only John and her daughter Eleanor outlived her.
