I think that NAFTA was an American government action that had a profound effect on Canadian culture and identity.  The notion of removing the physical and cultural element of borders between both countries was one of the first steps towards globalization and the idea of a world where boundaries were becoming less essential.  NAFTA as both actual trade agreement and symbolic action made both cultures embrace aspects of each and allowed any potential cultural resistance begin to dissipate.  As NAFTA began to take a hold in Canada,  economic, political, and cultural fluidity was becoming more evident.
