I assume you are referring to Dickens' Hard Times...

The novel is about a man named Thomas Gradgrind, of course a resident of England who is a the principal of a school of his own design, one that is entirely focused on filling children's heads with facts at the expense of all else.  His children Tom and Louisa are in the school as well as several others, these are the main focus of the book.

The plot of the book follows these children as they grow and move on in their lives and particularly looks closely at the effects of the type of education they received, one without any opportunity or emphasis on feeling or considering their own feelings.
