The Pilgrims faced many hardships. Getting to North America was one of the hardships. They encountered rough weather and ended up far from where they had hoped to land. As a result, they arrived in North America much later than expected.

Once they got here, they faced a shortage of food. They didn’t know the land well. As a result, they didn’t know what to grow and how to farm in the area. Plus, by the time they arrived, the growing season was essentially over. A lack of food was an issue.

They also faced disease. Many people died from illness the first winter that they were in North America.

While unfriendly Native Americans could have been a concern, the Pilgrims were fortunate to develop friendly relations with the Wampanoag tribe. This tribe helped the Pilgrims adjust to life in North America. Squanto was particularly helpful to the Pilgrims. Without the help from the Native Americans, the Pilgrims may not have survived.
