The brocade cassock is originally gifted to the Boddhisatva Guanyin by the Buddha. When the Buddha hands the cassock to Guanyin, he tells her that she must present the cassock and a nine-ringed monk's staff to the one who will go to the Western Heavens to fetch the scriptures.

Accordingly, the one who wears the cassock will avoid the Wheel of Reincarnation.

Later, Xiao Yu (the minister) asks the Boddhisatva Guanyin about the advantages of wearing the brocade cassock. She tells him that anyone who wears it will not be ensnared in Hell, will frighten all the demons away, and will not be visited with evil. They will also be given immortality and sainthood. However, the cassock will only confer all of these benefits if someone who reveres the Buddha wears it.

The Boddhisatva Guanyin maintains that only a sage should wear the brocade cassock. In the end, she gifts the brocade cassock and the nine-ringed staff to the Tang Emperor (Taizong), who in turn gives it to Xuanzang, a pious monk.
