What happens on the outcasts' first day together?

An illustration of the letter 'A' in a speech bubbles

The outcasts are first escorted to the outskirts of town and left on their own.  As they are on their way to Sandy Bar on their first day together, all of the outcasts except for John Oakhurst, are complaining and cursing.  After a while they decide to stop and set up camp for the night.  All of the characters except for John Oakhurst, once again, began to drink and became drunk.  John Oakhurst thinks of leaving but does not and then the outcasts are met by an old acquaintance of Oakhurst – Tom Simson and his wife, Piney.  John made sure that no one told Tom and Piney why they were in the middle of nowhere and the characters then went to sleep.
