Manase's oldest son Hiroaki goes for a ride on his bicycle one afternoon to look for some rocks.  When he does not return by nightfall, search parties are sent out after him, to no avail.  The next morning, a child's bike is found near a quarry, and Hiroaki's body is discovered in a tunnel in a cliffside.  He has been stabbed multiple times and has bled to death.

The murder is attributed to the work of a serial killer who has been operating in the area, and is never resolved.  Years later, Manase's second son, Takaaki, reveals that he had been with Hiroaki in the tunnel on that fateful day.  Takaaki, who was quite young at the time of the murder, remembers that his brother had heard his father Manase's voice right before he disappeared.  To his horror, Manase, who has suffered throughout his life with flashbacks of mass killings he witnessed in a cave at the end of the War, realizes that in all probability, he has killed his own son.
