In January Holling, his friends, and his sister, Heather, have to tear down pictures of him in his Ariel costume. He was Ariel in the school's Shakespeare play and someone posted the pictures of him all over school. He saves his sister from being hit by a bus on the first day of the state's standardized testing. He sees the bus sliding on the ice and pushes her out of its path. While he does save his sister, the bus hits him himself, so Ms. Baker must drive him to the emergency room. Because he knows the teacher is with his son taking care of him, Holling's father doesn't get out of bed. By the time Holling returns to school more pictures of him are posted, but this time he is seen as a hero.
