In Chapter two Bruno and the family arrive at their new home. It is a dismal place compared to their home in Berlin. Bruno is very unhappy and tells his mother that they should spend the night and then return to Berlin.  His mother tells him that is not an option and to make the best of it.  This is where they are going to live for the foreseeable future.  Bruno ask Maria what she thinks, and she says it isn't her place to say anything, but his father has an important and serious job.  When Bruno replies that his father should think twice about that job, he is suddenly filled with fear because his father's bedroom door opens.  He fears his father has heard him.  But it is a young blond soldier.  Bruno suddenly notices a small window in the corner of his room.  He looks out the window and what he sees makes him suddenly feel very cold and unsafe.
