In chapter 5 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and Ron are prevented from accessing Platform 9 and 3/4 when the brick wall remains solid during their traversal attempt. So, in a fit of adolescent "genius," the two decide to take Ron's father's flying Ford Anglia and fly it to Hogwarts by following the path of the Hogwarts Express. The two are semi-successful but encounter some difficulties, such as the moment when the Invisibility Button malfunctions, as well as the two becoming very hungry and overheated from the journey.

Finally arriving at Hogwarts successfully, the two attempt to land the car on the front lawn but accidentally run into a seemingly harmless Willow tree. Suddenly, however, after crashing into it, the tree hits back, pummeling the car and breaking Ron's wand. The two narrowly manage to escape while the car gets pummeled and retreats autonomously into the forest. They are taken inside and severely reprimanded by their teachers.
